<p>Agility Robotics published a new <a href='https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/industrial-humanoid-policy'>industrial humanoid policy</a> on July 15, 2026, presenting six recommendations for a regulatory environment around humanoid robots. The timing matters because Digit is no longer discussed only as a laboratory machine: Agility has announced commercial agreements, customer-site work and trade-show demonstrations. Those categories are not interchangeable, and the company’s own material shows why the dividing line matters.</p><h2>A policy note is not a safety certificate</h2><p>Agility’s policy frames humanoids as powerful tools with economic and social consequences. It argues that regulation should preserve room for innovation while taking responsibility for people who work near these machines. That is a legitimate policy position, but it is not a certification, a risk assessment or a performance benchmark. The page does not publish a pass-or-fail test for a humanoid operating beside workers, nor does it establish a universal threshold for autonomy, stopping distance, recovery from a fall or safe handling of a payload.</p><p>That distinction is especially important for mobile humanoids. A fixed industrial arm normally operates inside a defined cell with known reach limits and controlled access. A bipedal robot must balance, move through shared spaces and interact with objects while its surroundings change. A policy recommendation can describe how regulators should think about those risks; it cannot by itself prove that a particular robot is ready for every factory, warehouse or public environment.</p><h2>Mercado Libre: a commercial plan, not a completed rollout</h2><p>The clearest recent example is the <a href='https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/mercado-libre-and-agility-robotics-announce-commercial-agreement'>commercial agreement announced by Mercado Libre and Agility</a>. The companies said Digit would be integrated into Mercado Libre’s facility in San Antonio, Texas, initially supporting commerce-fulfillment work. They also described plans to explore additional logistics uses across Latin America.</p><p>The release is meaningful because it identifies a real operator, a named facility and an operational domain. It is stronger evidence than a generic promise to sell robots someday. At the same time, the wording describes an agreement and a planned integration. It does not provide a commissioning date, a completed acceptance test, a production throughput figure, an autonomy rate, an incident record or an independently measured reduction in ergonomic risk. Readers should therefore describe it as a planned commercial deployment unless a later report confirms that the system is operating and publishes those results.</p><p>The release also says Digit is already commercially deployed in industrial settings and describes its ability to walk, lift and move totes through existing aisles. Those are company statements about the platform’s operating model, not independent verification of the Mercado Libre site. The difference is small in a headline and decisive in an engineering review.</p><h2>What earlier demonstrations actually establish</h2><p>Agility’s March 2025 announcement about Digit’s updated capabilities provides useful technical context. The company reported a more efficient battery system lasting up to four hours, autonomous docking, more robust limbs and end effectors, and additional controls including a Category 1 stop, a safety PLC, an on-robot emergency stop, a wireless teach pendant and Functional Safety over EtherCAT.</p><p>Those features address practical deployment concerns. Controlled deceleration, independent safety control and accessible emergency intervention are more relevant to industrial operation than a short clip of a robot walking across a stage. The same announcement said Digit could work with autonomous mobile robots through Agility Arc and described demonstrations at ProMat, including tote handling, palletizing, depalletizing, AMR loading and unloading, and putwall tasks.</p><p>However, a trade-show demonstration remains a demonstration. It shows that a task was performed under the conditions selected for the event. It does not establish repeatability across shifts, tolerance to damaged packaging, performance under changing lighting, recovery from unexpected contact or safe operation around untrained personnel. Likewise, the presence of a safety PLC or an emergency stop does not by itself prove compliance with every requirement of a particular workplace.</p><h2>The safety question is where deployment becomes real</h2><p>Agility’s announcement explicitly notes that safety standards for dynamically stable industrial mobile robots such as Digit are still developing. That is a useful limitation to state plainly. A humanoid can have safety features that are important and credible while the full operating case remains site-specific.</p><p>For a customer, the practical evidence should include the exact task, the workspace, the people allowed inside it, the robot’s supervision model, the intervention procedure and the conditions under which the system must stop. It should also cover maintenance, battery changes, network loss, payload variation and what happens after a fall or failed grasp. None of those questions is answered by a policy page or a launch video alone.</p><h2>How to read the announcement without overstating it</h2><p>The useful conclusion is not that humanoids are either ready or unready. It is that evidence has stages:</p><ul><li>A prototype demonstrates that a behavior can be produced.</li><li>A staged demonstration shows the behavior under selected conditions.</li><li>A pilot tests integration with a real workflow and real constraints.</li><li>A deployment proves whether the system can repeat the work safely and economically over time.</li></ul><p>Agility’s July policy note belongs to the regulatory and societal discussion. The Mercado Libre announcement belongs to the commercial-deployment pipeline. The ProMat material belongs to the capability-demonstration record. Treating all three as proof of production-scale autonomy would overstate what the official documents establish.</p><p>That is why the announcement is worth following. The important question is no longer whether Digit can perform an impressive isolated movement. It is whether the company can turn those capabilities into repeatable, supervised and measurable work in a named facility.
